About Designer
Cath Kidston, born Catherine Isabel Audrey Kidston on November 6, 1958, is a renowned English entrepreneur, author, and fashion designer. Her company, Cath Kidston Limited, specializes in selling home furnishings and other related products through mail order and shops. Kidston is particularly celebrated for her nostalgic floral patterns that have become synonymous with her brand.
Growing up in Hampshire with three siblings, Kidston attended several boarding schools before making her way to London. Before venturing into business, she worked for socialite Nicky Haslam. It was during this time that she met her friend and partner, Hugh Padgham, while decorating his house. Despite facing personal challenges, including a battle with breast cancer, Kidston’s resilience and creativity led her to establish her first store in Holland Park, London in 1964. Initially selling revamped furniture and hand-embroidered tea towels, she playfully described her store as a “glorified junk store.”
Over the years, Cath Kidston’s brand has flourished, with 57 shops across the United Kingdom, Japan, Ireland, and Korea by 2011. Her business philosophy revolves around creating products that people either love passionately or dismiss entirely. Much like Laura Ashley, Kidston has left an indelible mark on the fabric market, captivating consumers with her signature prints.
Kidston draws inspiration from her childhood memories—a rambling house, boarding school experiences, and ponies. Her mother’s journey as a widow, navigating life independently after her husband’s passing, motivated Kidston to be self-reliant. She channeled her ambition into her business, which became her metaphorical child. Although she couldn’t have biological children due to her illness, Kidston’s stepdaughter remains close to her heart.
Beyond business, Kidston’s passion lies in decorating houses. From restyling her childhood bedroom to playing imaginative games about shops and traders, she has always been business-oriented. Her determination and control over her life stem from her formative years. Cath Kidston embodies strength, ambition, and a love for creating beautiful spaces.
