Preciosa Lighting is a glass manufacturer of chandeliers and jewellry, firmly established in the international market of today. Rooted in Czech Republic‘s rich history of the Crystal Valley, home to Bohemian glass, Preciosa Lighting has the continuation of Crystal Valley‘s old glassmaking tradition as its main objective, while subjecting glass manufacture to technological innovations in order to utilize the full scope of glass and crystal‘s inherent potential.
With the very first kilt being set up in 1548, the Crystal Valley would steadily advance as a glassmaking centre, giving birth to Bohemian glass in 1688, when glassmaking master Michael Müller succeeded in creating a perfectly clear type of glass indistinguishable from nature‘s mountain crystals. From then on, many artisans outside of Bohemia would try to copy this technique, while the Bohemian tradition would be passed down from father to son.
Fast forward into the 19th century, the patrilineal succession was not sufficient to handle the pressures of industrialization, which had led to the establishment of multiple glassworking factories in the region. To cope with the demands of a growing market, 1856 the School of Glass was founded in Kamenický Šenov, the first of this kind worldwide, to be followed by a School of Jewellry in the nearby town of Jablonec nad Nisou.
What would come to be known by the brand name Preciosa Lighting was the result of a merging of 25 companies and factories in Jablonec, Liberec and Turnov after World War II.
1956 Jablonec witnesses the foundation of the Research Institute of Glass and Jewellry, which continues to this day and forms an integral part of Preciosa‘s research and development efforts. To augment its capacity, Preciosa has also established its own developmental laboratory for applied research and technological experiments.
Preciosa‘s Lighting vestemts in research have come to frution, such as in the year 2009 when the world‘s smallest cut stone with 33 facets was presented, measuring only half a milimetre.
The Philosophy of Preciosa Lighting: Cultural Heritage of Crystal Valley
Preciosa Lighting remains deeply indebted to Crystal Valley and its residents, without whose ingenuity and hard work the company would not have become the major success it is today. Following the principle of balance, Preciosa has set up the Preciosa Foundation in 1993 to help various organizations and NGOs, while also offering support to scientific and professional training developments.
The company Preciosa Lighting is ever keen on pushing the outmost limits of what is possible in glassmaking. Always high on the priority list, research and development feature prominently in Preciosa‘s history and self-presentation. The company‘s vision is not limited to discovering new potentials of a material both valuable and gorgeous, however, but to also link these with the concerns and demands of our day and age. 2013 was such a year, when Preciosa introduced the 15 facetted MAXIMA, an uprecedented type of crystal that is entirely lead-free and therefore compliant with the highest international environmental standards.
Preciosa Lighting: Crystalline Clarity for a Luxurious Interior
The company‘s credo is that, however chimerical trends may be, the demand will always follow the latest technological standards. Functionality and eco-friendliness both play an important role in developing new products.
Preciosa Lighting presents four families of chandeliers by the name of Rudolf, Louis, Eugene and Maria Theresia. Each of these comes in three versions: A Historic Design drawn from Bohemian heritage, a Contemporary Colour representing current trends and a trailblazing New Interpretation.
