Art Deco stands apart from other modern styles thanks to its love of geometric forms combined with rich colors, symmetrical shapes and decadent details. To imagine interior design created in this style, it’s enough to go back to the “Great Gatsby” epoch. That is a perfect and short guide for everyone.
The Revolutionary Uprise of Art Deco
Art Deco was born as a decorative style, not in a moment, but going through a long history, having time to become increasingly refined and acquiring its own inimitable features. It took a while for this new-born trend to gain its own vision, distinguishing it from others, until finally nobody compared it with Modernism, Constructivism and other styles that appeared simultaneously.
Unlike any other style in interior design, art and other spheres of life, it had to prove over and over again that it is different, independent and that its pieces of art together with the furniture and other decorative elements have their own DNA.
It is much easier to understand the essence of Art Deco simply by looking at the stages of its appearance. They all are not only symbolic but happened in real life, at the beginning of the 20th century.
- The foundation of The Society of Decorative Artists in Paris, 1914. Each member was directly or indirectly connected to Art Nouveau. The main goal of creating the groups was to prove that classic styles aren’t the only ones deserving attention and respect, but that a decorative one has the right to demand the same. ;
- The first exhibition took place only in 1925, without getting the attention it deserved, but it marked the true beginning of this style nonetheless.;
- 1929-1931 the Great Depression helped to transform Art Deco into the stream that sets trends instead of staying on the sidelines following them.;
The Main Features of Art Deco Style
Being a stream that fought with the pompous classic design, Art Deco incorporated different characteristics completely opposing it. From then on, a new word in design was set.
- it has nothing to do with fine art, neither in sense nor in appearance;
- simple forms for the furniture and all decorative elements;
- solid colors of the surface;
- strict design with a certain structure;
- all elements of the interior must be practical but at the same time having an artistic mood;
- the pieces of furniture and lighting are all functional and practical objects first;
- the main idea is to make the production fit for mass-usage by attracting modern technology instead of concentrating on the classic ways of crafting which limit access;
How to Create a True Art Deco Interior Design
Since Art Deco has touched all spheres of life, there is no difficulty at all to find elements for decorating the interior and give it the true spirit of Art Deco. The main role here belongs to the pieces of furniture and lighting.
To recognize Art Deco style in furniture, it takes a couple of minutes as all the tables, chairs, mirrors, even picture lights, and fabric for the sofa and arm-chairs strictly follow the main rules established in the 1920s of the previous century: egalitarian style in a special aesthetic form.
The lighting has a geometric shape and glam design. There can be chandeliers, wall or floor lamps, always made of high-end, sleek materials. Lighting is allowed to be a real statement and attract the whole attention in the room. For instance, a luxury chandelier of glass decorated with pressed leaves, where each element is individually made. Such a chandelier can be found in the collection of professional Art Deco style designers from the company Vaughan. Then there are the luxurious table lamps by Italamp, made with glass of a deep amber or violet color, or simply transparent.
These and other types of lighting are available on our website. Every piece of lighting and furniture, whether it’s made of glass in a glamorous style, has a brass finish or has been created with respect to all laws of geometry, they all can be used to create a pure Art Deco mood and perfectly complete the interior design.
