History of Boyd Lighting
It all began when William Boyd realized the growing demand for customized lighting by interior designers and architects in the San Francisco Bay Area, which lead to the company‘s foundation in 1921, followed by the opening of a manufacturing facility in San Francisco. In the upcoming decades, Boyd Lighting would emerge as a company able to keep up with the shifting needs of its time, a sensibility for which Boyd Lighting has maintained to this very day.
Still producing only customized lighting fixtures, it was Jay Sweet, William Boyd‘s grandson and son of Dorothy Boyd and Major Jack Sweet, who would be responsible for Boyd Lighting‘s expansion into other market areas when he became a member of the family business in 1975. Having appointed a team of in-house designers, it was also his idea to move the manufacturing site to Colorado Springs, the company‘s headquarters staying in California.
The 90s saw the company‘s development of a signature style, allowing its growing status as a high-end manufacturer to attract many internationally acclaimed designers to work on its collections.
Today, Jack‘s son Schuyler Sweet represents Boyd Lighting‘s fourth generation, with multiple award-winning Doyle Crosby as Director of Design, leading a team of world-renowned designers to continue wiritng Boyd Lighting‘s great success story.
Boyd Lighting: Perfect Blend Between Practicability and Aesthetics
Boyd Lighting can be said to exemplify American hand-made quality, up to twenty artisans lending their skill and artistic ability to each product. The result of which is a production that is not only artistically accomplished, but also state-of-the-art in terms of energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, performance and functionality.
Metals polished with a jeweler‘s precision, glistening crystals, smooth burnished woods, hand-dyed leathers, silks, linens and hand-blown glass are among the high-quality materials used to construct a fixture created to blend into its context as well as improve its quality. Known for the durability, dependability and unparalleled decorative power of their products, Boyd Lighting can refer to a long history of receiving commissions and being entrusted with producing customized fixtures for numerous sumptuously furnished public spaces, the company has also made a name for itself in the residential and hospitality sector.
Boyd Lighting: American Quality in Classic and Modern Designs
Boyd Lighting presents products both for indoor and outdoor use, gathering design ideas across time and space. In the indoor category, chandeliers, pendant lights, ceiling fixtures, lanterns, sconces, table lamps and floor lamps can be obtained. As an example, the Catacaos ceiling fixture by Federico Otero has an outstanding lampshade in a spiraling texture made in the traditional Latin American Filigrana technique, available in the colours bone white and espresso, with white and black metal finishes respectively. Elevating a classical Japanese ornamental pattern to contemporary relevance, the Deirdre Jordan‘s Kyoto pendant and table lamp in blackened brass or satin white demonstrate how the seamless blend between old and new can be done without effort.
Moving to the outdoor lighting section, one will find wall lights, lanterns, as well as pier and post mounted lights, an example of which is offered by the Belvedere I lantern in blackened solid brass with matted ribbed glass. While alluding to a traditional form, it also possesses a timeless linearity and elementariness, characterizing many of Boyd Lighting‘s designs.
