Reproduction of antique model. Louis XVI Cabriolet Chair with caned back en cabriolet, circa 1790.
The grace and distinction of this Parisian chair lie in the fineness of the fluting of the legs, combined with very restrained moulding. The comfort is due to the pronounced en cabriolet form of the back. The legs are perfectly proportioned, and the moulding of the rails is reminiscent of the forms of Georges Jacob of the Senes, used in the late Louis XVI style.
The Archives Nationales Françaises have chairs in this spirit, but with an arced crest rail. Louis XVI Style French style period reverting to classicism, inspired by the straight lines of ancient Greece and Rome, from 1777 to 1790, corresponding roughly to the reign of Louis XVI (1774 – 1793). The period, and the intermediate styles coming in between Louis XV and Louis XVI are known as “transitional” in the trade and “neoclassical” by researchers.
