Reproduction of antique model. Louis XVI Rhine Valley Armchair, circa 1785 - 1790. Original: Private collection, Eastern Belgium.
These eminent pieces offer up an integrity for elegant dining. The straight form is well presented but punctuated with delicate curves at the armrests and a classical disposition expressed in the wood portraying a certain sober quality. The fluting, garlands of laurels, vases and lamps are all representative of classical styling that underlines this agreeable frame, easy to place in a large number of décors.
Louis XVI Style French style period reverting to classicism, inspired by the straight lines of ancient Greece and Rome, from 1777 to 1790, corresponding roughly to the reign of Louis XVI (1774 – 1793). The period, and the intermediate styles coming in between Louis XV and Louis XVI are known as “transitional” in the trade and “neoclassical” by researchers.
