Reproduction of antique model. Louis XVI Medaillon Armchair, circa 1775-1780.
This armchair is slightly different from the previous one, but has sufficient similarities for them to be well-matched. The proportions are slightly different, but the carving is very similar, although it has rather more beads and a rosette at the centre of the rail. The arm-rests are again in a Louis XV "assagi" style, but the armchair itself is constructed a la d’Artois.
The high seat makes it suitable for use at a table. Louis XVI Style French style period reverting to classicism, inspired by the straight lines of ancient Greece and Rome, from 1777 to 1790, corresponding roughly to the reign of Louis XVI (1774 – 1793). The period, and the intermediate styles coming in between Louis XV and Louis XVI are known as “transitional” in the trade and “neoclassical” by researchers.
