Reproduction of antique model. Light Louis XVI Perle Bergere, circa 1789. Original: private collection.
This pretty Parisian model of bergere is a small seat, built for charm, elegance and comfort. To this must be added carving of large beads, acanthus, and a highly original carving arrangement at the tops of the stiles and the centre of the back rail. This bergere is rather reminiscent of certain works by the innovative master Sulpice Brizard. The adhering offset rosettes are an example of late Louis XVI style.
Louis XVI Style French style period reverting to classicism, inspired by the straight lines of ancient Greece and Rome, from 1777 to 1790, corresponding roughly to the reign of Louis XVI (1774 – 1793). The period, and the intermediate styles coming in between Louis XV and Louis XVI are known as “transitional” in the trade and “neoclassical” by researchers.
